What role should USDA play (funding, programming, actively supporting) in the public’s knowledge of agricultural literacy?

Ideas developed by the State Officers attending the 2011 State Presidents’ Conference:
1. Educating with ag education is a good idea, but we need a broader mechanism 2. Marketing orders, campaigning different commodities 3. Establish national programs with tiers to local levels to connect with people to promote agricultural literacy 4. USDA sponsor and promote a national conference promoting ag literacy to face it and promote it (Train the Trainer) 5. Write curriculum for Food for America and/or PALS – possibly start with Ag in the Classroom 6. Know your Farmer, Know your Food – Use FFA members with outstanding SAEs and/or use Collegiate FFA members as examples 7. Youth report – Youth for Beef awards – sponsor FFA events 8. Promote USDA in our curriculum 9. Create a class for people who want to be an ag teacher – online course 10. Universal Leave Behind/Brochure on agriculture in general – can be used by state officers, other partners, farmer’s market 11. Promo card that directs person to website for information – example in the metro station 12. Production Agriculture Conference – an exchange of ideas of how to get out into the public 13. Start with kids in school – start more a programs especially in urban areas 14. Start at the local level 15. Have facts in the grocery store telling customers where food comes from then give them a website to go to for more information

Get noticed in media and have scouts that visit schools and tell kids about the vast field of agriculture

The farm bill can have a word of the day like Bill O'Reilly on the O'Reilly Factor, and advertise this on the news channel, email, facebook, myspace, twitter, other social websites, the news paper, and even the schools websites. However, they should include the definition for those who dont have the time to look it up. Also put stories in the paper about the farmers and where your food comes from. This will inform people about the food they eat and how much time, energy, money, and patience is put into the food they eat.
